Studying Google Ads

Updated: Dec 13, 2024

I'm currently in my last semester at the University of Michigan - Dearborn and this semester in my digital marketing class we have been all about getting down and dirty with Google Ads. As our last two exams come up, I've been cramming information on Google Ads like crazy, trying to wrap my head around this whole paid search thing, and trust me, there's a lot to unpack here. The Google Skillshop has played a huge roll in helping me study for these exams. Here’s a more in-depth look at Google Ads and some real talk on how it can seriously bump up any business’s online game.

Google Ads

So, Google Ads, right? It’s this platform where you can throw your ads up on Google’s search results and across their sites. You pay every time someone clicks on your ad, which sounds pretty straightforward. It's perfect for getting more eyes on your website or whatever you're selling. We’ve been talking loads about how it puts your business right in front of people the moment they’re searching for stuff you offer. Super timely.

Starting a Campaign

Starting a Google Ads campaign isn’t just throwing money at Google and hoping for the best. You gotta have a game plan. First, you figure out what you want from the campaign—like more visits to your store, more calls, or maybe just more people knowing your brand exists. Next up, picking who sees your ads, as a digital marketer, this is what I like to call, finding your target audience. Setting how much you wanna spend, and then crafting ads that grab people's attention. In my digital marketing class, we've done some practice runs setting these up, and man, it's kinda like a puzzle, trying to see what setup can make the most bang for your buck.

Keywords

Keywords are literally everything in Google Ads. Our professor basically told us, If you pick the right ones, you're golden. If you mess them up, it's like throwing cash into a black hole. We've been learning about matching the types of keywords with what you’re selling. It's all about being relevant and not just throwing in popular terms that don't relate to your target audience.

Click-Worthy Ad Copy

Here’s where it gets kinda tricky. Writing ad copy is not an easy thing to do. You need to be very clear, catchy, and make someone want to click without being too pushy. In my digital marketing class we’ve been practicing writing ad copy in groups, and it’s pretty clear not everyone's a born copywriter. But, getting feedback and seeing what works and what doesn't is a solid way to learn.

Monitoring and Tweaking

Once your ads are out there, you can’t just kick back and relax. But keep in mind, you gotta keep an eye on your ads to see if they’re doing what you want. Although, It wouldn't hurt to switch up your strategy based on what’s working. Maybe some keywords just aren’t pulling their weight, or maybe an ad's message isn’t hitting right. It's all about tweaking things here and there. Honestly, it’s kinda fun, like tweaking a recipe until it tastes just right.

Exam Prep

We have a couple upcoming exams on Google Ads. One about search and one about display ads. All this stuff about Google Ads isn't just about getting a good grade, even though you should always try to get a good grade, it’s helps you develop actual skills that can help you out in the real world. Understanding how to use Google Ads effectively is like having a secret weapon for digital marketing.

So, whether you're trying to boost a business or just trying to pass your digital marketing class like me, getting to try to understand hoe Google Ads works is a smart move. It’s not just about ads, it’s about connecting with people at the right time and the right place. Here’s hoping all this studying pays off, not just on the exam but in real-life marketing gigs down the line!
